Dr. Olivia Carter-Pokras, Associate Professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, has a busy week coming up. She will present her work at both the 20th National Conference on Chronic Disease Prevention & Control and the Third National Leadership Summit on Eliminating Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Health. At the Health Disparities conference, Dr. Carter-Pokras will be part of a SPH contingent that included graduate student Sonja Williams and Dr. Cheryl Holt of the Department of Public and Community Health. According to Dr. Carter-Pokras, the three of them are the only students or faculty from the University of Maryland system presenting at the conference. Congrats!

Dr. Olivia Carter-Pokras will be giving a presentation “Lost Opportunities for Tobacco Cessation: Diabetics in the Maryland Adult Tobacco Survey” at the 20th National Conference on Chronic Disease Prevention and Control on Monday, February 23, 2009, from 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
Dr. Carter-Pokras will be presenting findings from a DHMH funded tobacco program evaluation project in a session on “A04 Smoking Out Disparities in Diabetes.”

Dr. Olivia Carter-Pokras, Associate Professor, Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, will be serving as a panelist for a session on “Understanding Federal Data Systems: An Overview of the Collection, Analysis and Reporting of Race and Ethnicity Data” on Thursday, February 26, 2009 from 1:40 pm – 4:30 pm.
Ms. Sonja Williams will be giving a presentation “Washington Adventist Hospital: Helping Others Breath Better” on Friday, February 27, 2009 – from 1:00 pm - 2:20 pm. Ms. Williams will be presenting findings from a community based participatory research project led by Dr. Olivia Carter-Pokras, Adventist Health Care Inc.’s Center for Health Disparities, and Montgomery County Government’s Latino Health Initiative in a session on “E12 Innovative Evaluation for Improved Outcomes. ”

On Thursday, February 26, 2009 - 10:50 am - 12:00 pm, Dr. Cheryl Holt will present research in a session entitled "A15. Cultural and Linguistic Competency Research: Community-Based Research Culture, Design, and Awareness." This workshop will provide an overview of community-based research, incorporating culture, design and awareness.
The presentations will highlight various models and approaches that can be implemented with diverse populations, including designing a program with consumer input, modifying approaches to better fit underserved populations, and examining an exemplary model of intervention.
