Mark Your Calendars V: Horowitz Center for Health Literacy’s Brown Bag Series

In addition to their ongoing Speaker Series, the Herschel S. Horowitz Center for Health Literacy has just announced several events in their upcoming Brown Bag Series.

The Brown Bag Series is intended as a time to work on a specific topic while creating more opportunities for attendee interaction. The events are open to faculty, staff and interested people from the community, and all will be held in Room R3302 of the SPH Building (here’s a map). Here are the confirmed events:

Tuesday, March 10 11:45-1:00
Plain Language: Improving How We Communicate

Speakers: Joanne Locke, Previous Plain Language Advisor, HHS Office of Disease Prevention & Health Promotion and Annetta Cheek, Chair of the Board, Center for Plain Language.

The speakers will focus on definitions of plain language, benefits and principles to use when communicating application of your research findings.

Health Literacy and the Communication of Genomic Information

Speaker: Kimberly Kaphingst, Ph.D. Head of the Communication Research Section in the intramural Social and Behavioral Research Branch at the National Human Genome Research Institute.

Examples of research comparing the effectiveness of different communication strategies in presenting information on family health history and genomic concepts to the lay public will be discussed.

Women's Health and Literacy through the Lifecourse

Ian Bennett, MD, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, School of Medicine, and Senior Fellow, Center for Public Health Initiatives and Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics, University of Pennsylvania.

A conceptual framework for linking literacy with women’s health will be explored. Analyses of the National Longitudinal Study of Youth ’79 (NLSY’79) will then be presented characterizing the relationship of reading skill in adolescence/early adulthood with health outcomes at mid-life (1979-2006).
