SPH and Health Care Reform

Over the past week the School of Public Health has been involved with two events related to the state of health care in Maryland and the United States.

On Sept. 23 U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Regina Benjamin visited the University of Maryland Stamp Student Union to celebrate the effective date of the new federal health care law. She met with Dean Robert Gold, students, faculty and other health care advocates to acknowledge the day, and to discuss its meaning for young adults. The law is especially relevant for college students and young adults because it allows for men and women up to the age of 26 to receive coverage under their parents' health insurance. On Sept. 30 the Herschel S. Horowitz Center for Health Literacy sponsored a meeting of the Public Health, Safety Net, and Special Populations working group of the Maryland Health Care Reform Coordinating Council. The Council was created by the Governor in April after the passage of federal health care reform, and the working groups of the council were established to focus on specific areas of health reform. This meeting revolved around the public health infrastructure and the impact of reform on special populations. University of Maryland students, faculty and staff were invited to attend the meeting and to provide comments to the council. To view the meeting's agenda and slideshow presentations, visit here.
