We might now have some long-range reasons, too. Ongoing research suggests the benefits of healthy, social and intellectual living habits reach far beyond the here and now. NIH recently held a conference to discuss these as possible preventative actions to avoid Alzheimer's disease in the future. Here's what NIH's News in Health had to say:
"Will doing crossword puzzles prevent memory loss as we age? Does exercise delay or prevent Alzheimer’s disease? Will adding fish oil to a diet help keep our brains healthy as we age? NIH recently convened a conference to answer these and other questions. The conclusion? Research so far has offered good leads about preventing Alzheimer’s disease and age-related cognitive decline."
Although this could be good news, our state of health as we age is apparently written in our DNA - and out of our control - as reported by WaPo on Friday. In a study of 1600 centenarians, several shared the same genetic markers. However, deputy director of the Institute which conducted the research still noted the importance of leading a healthful lifestyle.
