Campus to Target Men with HPV Awareness Campaign

The Diamondback this morning reported that UMD's Health Center is encouraging students to get vaccinated against HPV, but this campaign is a little out of the ordinary in its target audience. It's men the Center wants to inform about the benefits of the vaccine Gardasil.

Here's a blurb from the article in The Diamondback:

"The biggest misconception about Gardasil is that it is only for women and that it is only for preventing cervical cancer,” said Alli Matson, coordinator of sexual health education programs at the health center. “Obviously if you do not have a cervix, you are not going to think that this applies to you.”

Extensive U.S. Food and Drug Administration studies have shown the vaccine prevents genital warts in men and suggested it also guarded against penile, anal and throat cancers.
