Congrats, Dean's Graduate Scholars!

Congrats to all the graduate scholars honored at this year's Dean's Scholar's Dinner! Below is a run-down of the award winners and their backgrounds. (A post commending the student scholars is on its way!)

Epidemiology and Biostatistics

Lisa Bethune MPS-Epidemiology
* Graduate Research Assistant for Dr. Olivia Carter-Pokras;
* Developed her own project to assess the source of salmonella outbreaks from poultry;
* Coauthored two peer-reviewed publications;
* Completing two other manuscripts with Dr. Carter-Pokras

Family Science

Lindsey Hoskins Doctoral degree, Family Science
* Taught two classes here for several semesters
* Prez and member in the departmental student chapter of UMCFR
* Analyzed
in-depth interviews with 40 BRCA1/2-positive women
* Pre-Doctoral Fellowship at the National Cancer Institute at the NIH
* Presented her current and past research over 13 times at domestic and international conferences

Health Service Administration

A. Ginelle Jurlano Masters, Health Administration
* Founding prez of student organization, PHEAR
* Member of the Dean's Student Advisory Council Student ambassador
*
Serves on the SPH Community-based Research and Service Learning Committee
* Helped develop, testify for, and implement the legislation for Maryland House Bill 419
* Helped develop and implement the Healthy Futures Program

Kinesiology

Nathan Jenkins PhD, Kinesiology
* Immersed himself in the genetics and cellular and molecular biology of exercise
* Published in the American Journal of Physiology: Heart and Circulatory Physiology
* Published in the Journal of Applied Physiology
* An excellent citizen within the School, Department, and within the KNES laboratories

Maryland Institute for Applied Environmental Health

Rachel Rosenberg
Masters, MIAEH
* Worked for an environmental consulting firm, providing support to the US Environmental Protection Agency
* Delegate to the UN Commission on Sustainable Development
* Identifying environmental sources of human pathogens
* Poster awards from APHA and at UMD's Bioscience & Technology review day
* Summer Grad Fellowship, Maryland Water Resources Research Center

Public and Community Health

Sylvette La Touche-Howard PhD, PCH
* Let's ACT project using behavioral interventions to assist substance users
* Working on ACT HEALTHY to increase HIV medication adherence and decrease depression and sexual risk behavior
* Create HIV awareness campaign targeting African American women
* Eat Smart, Be Fit!
* Teaches two classes here
