Public Health Week Events are Slated!

The School of Public Health, PHEAR, Eta Sigma Gamma and the Center for Health and Wellbeing announced the events planned for Public Health Week, and it involves some competition!

Form a team of three to five people and earn five points for each Public Health Week event you attend. The team and individual with the most points win a prize!

Sign up your team at the Wellness Expo, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, April 5 in the Friedgen Family Student Lounge on the second floor of the School of Public Health building.

Monday, April 5:

Wellness Expo

11 a.m. - 1 p.m. @ Friedgen Family Student Lounge
  • Wellness Tips and Information
  • Team Sign-ups for Public Health Week Contest
  • Contest Activities: jump rope, Wii, hula hoop, etc.
  • "This is Public Health Week" sticker campaign
Public Health Week Kick-Off, Kick-Up
11:30 a.m. - 12:40 p.m. @ SPH 0128

Get your heart rate up in a high-low aerobics class with Dr. Jennie Phillips from Kinesiology.

Tuesday, April 6:

The Story Behind Public Health Week
2 p.m. - 3:15 p.m. @ SPH 2242

Dr. Caswell A. Evans, Jr., D.D.S., M.P.H., Associate Dean for Prevention and Public Health Sciences, College of Dentistry and Professor, School of Public Health.
This event focuses on how Public Health Week came into existence during our speaker's tenure as President of the American Public Health Association. Dr. Evans currently oversees prevention curriculum and related public health curriculum and training experiences.

Wednesday, April 7:

Breakfast with Fridge

8 a.m. - 10 a.m. @ SPH Friedgen Family Student Lounge

Join the Fridge and the SPH alumni association for breakfast. Eta Sigma Gamma will pull the raffle winner for their Haiti Relief Fundraiser and will provide info on a Health and Wellness Hot Topic.

Graduate Research Interaction Day
9 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. @ UMD Stamp Student Union

Graduate Research Interaction Day (GRID) is a campus-wide, conference style event where UMD grad student research is presented and discussed by faculty and students from across the University. Work will be judged by faculty panels specializing in a variety of disciplines.

Public Health Week at the Universities at Shady Grove
noon -1 p.m. @ The Universities at Shady Grove Building II, Multi-Purpose Room

Seminar Panel “Debunking the Vaccine-Autism Link: A Timely Debate”
Green Grove CafĂ© at Shady Grove will offer a healthy lunch. Postcards with nutritional info, hand sanitizers and “interesting public health facts” will be distributed during the lunch hour.

Thursday, April 8:

Wellness Report Card Symposium
11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. @ SPH 1303

The joint presentation will provide insight into two recently released documents about the health and wellness status of residents in Maryland. The first of the two presentations will be on the Maryland Wellness Report Card, a county-by-county assessment recently completed by DHMH. The Second focuses on the County Health Rankings, a nationwide county-by-county report.

Friday, April 9: Student Appreciation Day

Public Health Scavenger Hunt:
9 a.m. - 11 a.m. @ Friedgen Family Student Lounge

Get your friends together to answer clues and Public Health trivia questions around the SPH!

PHEAR Relay for Life Potluck Fundraiser
11 a.m. - 1 p.m. @ Friendgen Family Student Lounge

Faculty, students and staff are encouraged to participate in the PHEAR team’s final fundraiser for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. Please bring a dish to share. $2 donation suggested at the door.

Campus Forum: Catalyzing UM’s Health Information Technology Capacity
12 p.m. - 3 p.m. @ Special Events Room, 6137 McKeldin Library

A New University of Maryland Initiative for Consumer Driven Health Care.
Dean Gold of SPH is among the featured speakers!

Saturday, April 10

Family Bike Ride
9 a.m. @ School of Public Health

Sponsored by the SPH Alumni Association. Admission is two canned food items per participant, benefiting the food bank of Prince George's County. Meet Testudo! Win prizes!
