Dr. Young: Creating Healthier Schools

Epidemiology and Biostatistics chair, Dr. Deborah Rohm Young was a guest on Destination Casa Blanca this month to discuss obesity among children, and the role that schools can play in addressing the issue.

Among the changes she supports to create more nutrition-friendly schools: reducing the number of sweet treats in vending machines, and the hours that the machines operate.

"The amount of food that is at school is unbelievable," she told host, Ray Suarez. Watch here to learn more, and what the other guests suggested.

  1. This is such a good idea. However, getting schools to serve healthy meals is just the first step. You then have to educate parents, as otherwise parents will still send kids to school with unhealthy lunches. Did you catch the UK documentary "School Dinners"? Jamie Oliver helped teach school to cook healthy meals but parents were passing takeaway food to their kids through the school fence in protest!
