Building Kinections: Students Form New Service Group at SPH

Have a passion for community service and health? There's a new student organization within our School that's combining the two.

The organization aligns its mission with the School of Public Health, and it grows out of the Kinesiology department (thus, the 'K' for Connections). Fittingly, the members plan to emphasize physical activity through the community service it offers. The faculty adviser, Dr. Marvin Scott, says that students have already discussed the possibility of alternative break opportunities and getting involved in Special Olympics Maryland.

"Many of our current students have previously participated in community service activities, either as part of their high school requirement, as is the case for Maryland students, or through other organized groups, such as church or civic organizations." Dr. Scott says that Community Kinections will allow students to continue their good work in the area surrounding UMD.

"...the community can expect to benefit from our effort and resources, and students can expect to benefit from the experiences and personal satisfaction gained from helping others," he added.

The organization is funded through a Civic Engagement Stimulus Grant awarded to Dr. Scott, and department chair, Dr. Jane Clark, matched the amount. Juniors Terrina Gogue and Karla Stockford will be leading the orgaization.

The group's inaugural meeting be at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 25 in the Friedgen Family Student Lounge on the second floor of the SPH building. You can reach Dr. Scott here.
