Today we're talking with Jo Zimmerman, who won last year for "Best Vegetarian" Chili:
The Healthy Turtle: Are you planning to compete again this year?
Jo Zimmerman: I've competed in the KNES department's chili cook-off every year I've been at UMD, but last year was the first time I've won - it was pretty cool! I will compete again this year, but with a different recipe. You'll have to wait until next week to try it.
It really is a fun event, and a great way to start the school year. We all get a chance to hang-out with students, staff, and faculty that we don't usually see, because the grad students are almost as busy as the faculty and staff during the semesters. It is also a fairly inexpensive way to share some fun, and most chili recipies can be healthy, if you can skip the extra cheese or the third helping!
HT: Do you have a message that you would like to send to your competition?
Zimmerman: I'm not much for talking trash to my fellow competitors, but yesterday I noticed that I'm the only one signed-up this year, so I guess I'm a shoo-in to win something again! (We'll see...I suspect a late rush of entries.)
----
Thanks to Jo Zimmerman for sharing her thoughts on the competition. The rest of last year's winners were:
Regina Clary, Department Business Manager: Best in Show (she repeated her win from the year before).
Ryan White, Doctoral student: Hottest Chili
Jo Zimmerman, Doctoral student: Best Vegetarian
Dr. Espen Spangenburg: Most Interesting, for his chocolate chipotle chili.
Dr. Jim Hagberg: Best Bread was Dr. Jim Hagberg and
Christine Hopple, Doctoral Student: Best Dessert.
