Public Health Garden Receives Funding

This week the Public Health Garden received a grant from the University of Maryland Office of Sustainability Green Fund. The Public Health Garden is a community garden aiming to demonstrate sustainable agriculture and environmental best practices in support of public, environmental and community health. The garden is in its beginning stages and will be located between the School of Public Health building and Eppley Recreation Center.

The garden has brought together students and collaborators from the School of Public Health, the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, the Department of Facilities Management, the Department of Plant Science and Landscape Architecture, the Institute of Applied Agriculture at Maryland, University of Maryland Dining Services and the University of Maryland Office of Sustainability.

Garden members are holding a meeting on March 7 at 3 p.m. in the MIEAH/EPI Conference Room in the SPH building to discuss garden updates, generate new ideas, and share successes and challenges. Anyone who is interested in getting involved with the garden is welcome to attend the meeting. To learn more, visit the garden's blog here.

  2. It is healthier to have options like preparing your own healthy snack in order for you to track the calories you are taking. In this way it is much healthier.

  3. Great program - our Country has lost it's gardening/farming abilities and this threatens sustainability and independence as most of us rely on corporations for our food. Too much reliance on others creates a liability. Educating people how to grow and eat healthy foods is truly "teaching a person how to fish" as opposed to handing out fish. Great Job!
