Have a Healthy Halloween

The Healthy Turtle did a little research to help you make the safest, smartest and healthiest decisions this Halloween. It isn't bad if you eat one to three pieces of candy on Halloween, a spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association said in a My Health News Daily Article, but you should pay attention to the kind of candy you're eating.

Here's what My Health News recommends as the healthiest and least healthy candy choices this Halloween-

The healthiest are:
  • Jolly Ranchers- 70 calories, no fat and 11 grams of sugar in three pieces.
  • Blow Pops- 60 calories, no fat and 13 grams of sugar in one pop.
  • Gobstoppers- 60 calories, no fat and 14 grams of sugar in nine pieces.
  • Pixy Stix- 60 calories, 0 grams of fat and 15 grams of sugar in seven straws.
  • Candy corn- 140 calories, no fat and 32 grams of sugar in 19 pieces.
The least healthy are:
  • Mr. Goodbar- 250 calories, 17 grams of fat (including seven grams of saturated fat) and 23 grams of sugar in one bar.

Excessive candy consumption is not the only health concern on Halloween. A recent post in The Baltimore Sun's Picture of Health discussed the dangers of pumpkin carving. Here are a few tips they suggest to keep your hands and fingers injury free while carving your pumpkin-
  • Pick a good work Environment. Carve in a clean, dry and well-lit area.
  • Have a responsible adult in charge.
  • Involve children in a safe way.
  • Sharper is not better, use a pumpkin carving kit.
  • Watch where you cut, and always cut away from yourself.
  • Don't drink and carve.
  • Know when to seek medical help for a dangerous cut.

  1. Candy is a food that much favored by young children because it tastes sweet and delicious. We must remind our children not to eat too much candy because it will damage the health of teeth. We as parents need to supervise children so that children do not consume unhealthy foods. ~ Sehat

  2. If you have a choice of type of candy to eat, the best choice is dark chocolate but of course do not overdo it.

  3. This is certainly a good practice to do during halloween. Offering healthy foods to the kids can offer a good start in developing a healthy plan not just for the occasion, but as well as for the following days.
