Dr. Braun on Health Care + Health Literacy

Dr. Bonnie Braun, chair of the Herschel S. Horowitz Health Literacy Center, was interviewed by the University of Maryland Newsdesk about the importance of considering health literacy while exploring health care options.

She gave some examples that she's been personally involved in:

Four years ago, Dr. Braun and a team caught the attention of legislatures when they translated the 1500-page medicare bill into an understandable publication outlining the effects that would result from the legislation. She was invited to speak from the floor to the House of Representatives to explain who would be vulnerable of losing medicare if the proposed bill succeeded. Because of the work she and her team did to interpret the bill and its effects, the House passed legislation to fill the gaps.

For the past 10 years, Dr. Braun has been conducting research of her own into the effects of welfare reform on minorities in rural areas. What she discovered was that several were dealing with serious food shortages.

Thanks, Dr. Braun, for sharing your expertise! Check out the related videos to learn more perspectives of health care reform.
