PHEAR Releases Lesson in Paper Waste

This morning, the Public Health Engaging and Representing Student Organization (PHEAR) released a memo for professors and staff members with 10 ideas for creating "Green" classrooms and offices. Many of these can be used by students as well. Check 'em out below, and comment with your own tips!

1. Use e-mail and phone calls instead of writing down memos.
2. Create Powerpoint lectures that students can download and type notes on with their computers.
3. Edit on screen and use spellcheck before printing.
4. Print tests and other documents double-sided.
5. If a hard copy of an assignment or paper is necessary, require students to turn in papers that are double sided and single spaced.
6. Learn how to use the photocopier properly to reduce mistakes.
7. Shrink the font, margins, and spacing before printing to fit more on a page.
8. Use the e-mail list-serves and other alternatives for announcements instead of posting paper flyers.
9. Have students submit assignments electronically. Take advantage of ELMS and create assignments that students can turn in online using digital drop-box or e-mail.
10. For note taking and making lists, use a dry erase board or the back of unneeded papers as scrap paper instead of throwing them away.
