Last week, the School of Public health, in collaboration with the SPH Alumni Chapter, held the 6th annual Wrenn Scholarship Scramble golf tournament to benefit the Jerry P. Wrenn Endowed Scholarship. We'll have pictures up in a few days, but until then, here now the highlights provided by Gloria Friedgen, our Alumni and Outreach Coordinator:
---
Friedgen says the event went exceedingly well, with 88 golfers (led by 11 sponsorships) raising a grand total of $26,000. This translates into funding between 10-12 $1,000 scholarships.
While the day included several memorable moments--including a short talk from tourney honoree Jerry Wrenn and the donated gift baskets created by Karel Petraitis--one of the more comical was provided by Nick Novak, a former kicker for the Maryland Football team. As the story goes, Novak somehow got his wires crossed and went to the wrong course for the tournament, ending up in Ijamsville--nearly an hour's drive from College Park.
Tony Edwards, Scott McBrien, Stan Gelbaugh and Ed Gall (all former Terp football players) joked that they knew field goal kickers missed by a few feet, but 40 miles seemed a bit much.

Looking ahead to next year, the tournament will have the same format, and Friedgen hopes that the golfers will return as they've done for the previous 6 years--she notes that it's almost been like a family reunion: "Just about everyone who played in year one comes back," she said.
Thanks to all who--through their time and generous donations--made these scholarships and the event possible. We look forward to seeing you next year.
