Dr. Jae Kun Shim To Be Honored by American Society of Biomechanics

Dr. Jae Kun Shim has been selected for the 2009 Young Scientist Award by the American Society of Biomechanics (ASB), considered one of the most prestigious honors biomechanists can achieve early in their career. Dr. Shim serves an assistant professor in the kinesiology department of the University of Maryland School of Public Health.

As director of the university’s Neuromechanics Laboratory, Dr. Shim has led extensive research into biomechanics, focusing in particular on fingers and hands as well as lower extremity amputee locomotion. For the latter, Dr. Shim recently received a $200,000 grant from the Department of Defense to improve running-specific prostheses for people with amputations.

As part of the award, Dr. Shim will present his research at the annual ASB meeting, which will be held this August at Penn State University. He will also receive an engraved plaque, a check for $500 and a waiver of conference fees, according to the ASB Web site. More information about the award is listed on their Web site, www.asbweb.org.

Congratulations Dr. Shim!
