Exam Week Break Time

Amidst the stress and strain of Exam Week, the Healthy Turtle, while not a qualified expert, thinks it's important to take a break once in a while. Here are some worthwhile Web-based diversions to use as your break from studying.

Monday's Washington Post features an uplifting article about Fantasy Flight, a program that takes children with life threatening and terminal conditions to "The North Pole" to see Santa. To read the article, click here.

The Post also offers an illustrated explanation of what happens when your body sneezes. Unbeknownst to me, the brain has a "sneeze center," which receives signals from the nasal lining to activate the sneeze process. To see this explanation, click here.

Monday's New York Times offers some interesting insights into what your life might be like without a pinky finger. One occupational therapists estimates that you would lose 50 percent of your hand strength with the little guy. To read the article, click here.

As always, Tara Parker-Pope's Well Blog, the Wall Street Journal's Health Blog and NIH News are good reads. Click on each to check them out.

As for the Healthy Turtle itself, feel free to peruse some our recent posts, which have included a personal account of the Ironman Triathlon by a Maryland alum, a video on the dangers of hookah smoking by two students, and a discussion of Facebook Pro-Anorexia groups with Dr. Stacey Daughters.

If you'd like to learn more about what our school is doing internationally, Maryland International, the publication published by the University's Office of International Programs, features an article on just that topic. The article, which starts on Page 4, can be found in PDF format here.

If you have a good suggestion for an exam study break, comment below. Good luck, and enjoy the waning days of the Fall 2008 semester.
